Juvenile Justice Reform Experts, Advocates Offers Suggestions For Change

Putting a child in adult prison doesn’t deter crime or promote rehabilitation. All it does is create very angry youth that no one can work with.

Society must wake up, get involved, get educated about these juvenile issues, children are being arrested, convicted and sentenced as an adult, for "mistakes" made as a child. Surely there are alternative solutions to persue, not to coddle, but in helping with guidance, discipline, educational efforts to help children "become" productive members of society, far too many never had a "chance" since birth.

Success by Ralph Waldo Emerson

A fellow advocate posted this on his website, http://wandervogeldiary.wordpress.com/2011/07/18/wheres-waldo

Thank you for sharing, and felt it appropriate to post here on Justice Winds.....

To laugh often and much; To win the respect of intelligent people and the affection of children; To earn the appreciation of honest critics; To appreciate beauty; To find the best in others; To leave the world a little bit better whether by a healthy child, a garden patch or a redeemed social condition; To know even one life has breathed easier because you have lived. This is to have succeeded.

Flaws in the U. S. justice system

(except)A must read FULL ARTICLE

The justice has fallen prey to an exuberant emotionalism that defies fair play and hampers due course of justice.

The overriding spirit and general attitude of the adjudicating authorities is punitive and not forgiving even in minor cases where a simple warning would be enough.

The writer is a senior journalist and a former diplomat.

Courts should give juvenile lifers a chance of parole

Michigan's notorious juvenile lifer law denies even the possibility of parole for certain crimes, imposing the maximum adult penalty on children as young as 14. Bordering on barbarism, this practice is almost certainly unconstitutional, given recent court decisions.

There are "many" children all across this nation, sentenced to life in prison with NO chance of parole, for "mistakes" made as a "child", children DO deserve a "chance". What happened to "compassion and mercy"? Victims have NOT been forgotten, but it is also WRONG to "take another life", life with NO chance of parole is a "death sentence" for these children. Vengenance has NO place in these cases, but seems it is so clear to always be present.

They were ONLY children themselves, one was sent to the death row, the other two got life in prison......please read and share, get educated, involved in juvenile LAW REFORM.

A mother's journey/a child with prison life with NO parole

A mother's journey with a child sentencing to life in prison

(Excerpts) PLEASE READ FULL ARTICLE, are you walking in these shoes as well??

Close the judgments of your brain for a moment. Think of something pleasant. Look around your home, your job, your life. If you have children who are minors, think about them. If your children are grown, think back to when they were teens. Now ask yourself, "When should we sentence children to die in adult prisons?" Why do I care? I am the family member of a child sent to prison for life.

Change status quo for juvenile offenders

Time and time again, we heard powerful testimony urging us that children should not have to go to court, that they should have access to necessary services without entering the juvenile justice system, and that a focus needs to be placed on helping children and their families, not just addressing their behavior. Their voices have been strong and they have been heard.

Still a lot of work must be done, children are simply NOT adults, we all must work together to help save our nation's children from "doom and deaths"

California’s ‘Second Chance’ Bill Offers Hope for LWOP Sentenced Youth

(Excerpt) PLEASE read full article, so important/imperative for our nation's children, get educated and involved in these juvenile issues, for the sake and protection of your own child/dren. Many children NEVER HAD A CHANCE, since their births!

“The neuroscience is clear – brain maturation continues well through adolescence and thus impulse control, planning, and critical thinking skills are not yet fully developed,” state Sen. Leland Yee (D-San Francisco), a child psychologist and author of the bill, said through his office. “SB 9 reflects that science and provides the opportunity for compassion and rehabilitation that we should exercise with minors. SB 9 is not a get-out-of-jail-free card; it is an incredibly modest proposal that respects victims, international law, and the fact that children have a greater capacity for rehabilitation than adults.”

The Supreme Court closes the door to justice

The Supreme Court seems to have lost faith in the American court system.

A MUST READ...what are people to do, when the highest court in our nation seems to close the door to "justice"?

Wednesday, July 6, 2011

PLEASE take the time to view this video, citizens of America must get educated and involved with our nation's children, to help save them from doom and deaths. Children are still growing in mind and body, zero tolerance policies contribute to the destruction of them, they need dicipline, guidance and counseling to help them become productive members of society, instead of "throwing away the key." Far too many never had a "chance" since birth.

A juvenile justice system that's adrift

(Excerpt) Please read full article

These are interesting times for those who work in the field of juvenile justice. In many states, lawmakers and voters are turning away from the 1990s model of treating youth offenders like adults and locking them up in adult prisons. Influential conservatives have banded together to support constructive and cost-effective alternatives to lengthy sentences.........

Please get educated and involved in these issues, it affects us all and our nation's children.

Prosecutor Wants Boy Charged As Adult In Brother's Killing

Prosecutor Wants Boy Charged As Adult In Brother's Killing

WHY?? the prosecutor has stated right away in wanting to charge this child of only 11, as an adult. Why can't there be a "meeting of the minds"??, indeed he would get far more help in the juvenile system, is that not what the juvenile system is for??? Details of exactly how this tragedy came about, is yet to be known, but the sentencing of this "child" as an adult with adult sentencing, is clearly sending him to his own death.

It is NOT justified to take yet another life, this child.

Committee Approves Bill To End Life Sentences For Youth

(Excerpt) PLEASE READ FULL ARTICLE, children DO deserve a chance.

On a 5-2 vote, the Assembly Public Safety Committee approved legislation authored by Senator Leland Yee (D-San Francisco) that would bring California in line with the rest of the world by ending life without parole (LWOP) sentences for kids.

While no other country in the world outside of the United States allows children to be sentenced to LWOP, in contrast, there are approximately 290 people in California serving LWOP for crimes they committed as kids.

Considering that a 17-year-old is not old enough to vote, buy cigarettes and alcohol or even agree to a plea agreement without a parent or guardian's permission, the statute needed an update.

11 yr old boy charged with fatal shooting of younger brother

The boy currently is charged as a juvenile with murder and criminal recklessness. However, the case could eventually end up in adult court, as Indiana law allows anyone over age 10 to be tried as an adult.

For that to happen, prosecutors would have to convince the county's juvenile court judge that there was strong evidence against him, that he likely cannot be rehabilitated in the juvenile system, and that waiving him to adult court is in the best interest of the safety and welfare of the community.

Please note the above statement..."prosecutors would have to "convince" the county's juvenile court judge.......... that "he" likely "cannot be rehabilitated" in the juvenile system"......."waivering him" to "adults court" IS IN the "best interest" of the safety and welfare of the community"........How can "they" possibly KNOW he likely CANNOT BE REHABILITATED???? He is only 11, people do change, and children are STILL GROWING in mind and body!!! This child deserves at the very least "A CHANCE", nothing was mentioned in article of "what is in the "best interest" of this child!!!! What is the juvenile system for? HE IS A JUVENILE of only 11 yrs of age!!!!

N.C., N.Y. only states where 16-year-olds considered adults by criminal justice system

Alternative solutions can be met, instead of the making of a criminal/prison record, for "mistakes" made as a "child". The anatomy of the human brain has not fully developed until in one's early 20's. Zero tolerance policies contribute to the downfall of so many children. We ALL make mistakes, and must be guided accordingly, on the right and productive paths, far too many children have already been destroyed, juvenile law reform is imperative to help our nation's children.

Justice must be "tempered" with compassion and mercy.

11-year-old charged in brother's killing/COULD HAVE BEEN PREVENTED!!

Where were the parent/s??? This tragedy could have been prevented. Where did the boy get the gun??? Why were the parent/s NOT at home, with an 11 and 6 yr old boy???
This child did NOT get to where he is today, ALL BY HIMSELF, the accountibility of this tragedy lies with the "adult/s"!!!!
