Juvenile Court Reform in Tennessee

This is ONE of the many reasons, the fight continues for JUVENILE LAW REFORM, "NOT" just in TN, but all across ALL STATES....another important reason to NEVER BE SILENT ABOUT INJUSTICE to our nation's children.........
Get educated and involved, for the sake and safety/protection of your own children.

This is an excerpt...PLEASE READ FULL ARTICLE

.....The juvenile justice system in the United States is supposed to focus on rehabilitation for young offenders. But. for generations, it has largely been a purgatory, failing to protect them or give them the help and counseling they need to become law-abiding adults. Children who end up in juvenile courts often do not get due process protections like written complaints presenting the charges against them, adequate notice about legal proceedings or meaningful assistance of counsel.

Over the Years, Notion that “Kids are Different” Takes Hold in Youth Justice Policy Reform

Excerpt-PLEASE READ FULL ARTICLE, many excellent articles for information on juvenile issues.
Thanks to the author, for the time and efforts to bring attention to this most important issue of our nation's children.

"If there was uncertainty seven years ago when the U.S. Supreme Court abolished the death penalty for children, or in 2010 when it ruled that life-without-parole sentences imposed on youth for non-homicide crimes are unconstitutional, it should be clear by now that this is a new day for youth justice reform............."

Chasing Justice/wrongly convicted/Kerry Max Cook

A4WC: Advocates for Wrongly Convicted (quote below)       Sharing for

wake up call to INJUSTICE!!!!

I just got through reading the book "Chasing Justice" by Kerry Max Cook.

Kerry Max Cook is an innocent man who wrongly served two decades in

Texas's notorious death house for the brutal

1977 rape and murder of 21-year-old Linda Jo Edwards. His struggle for

freedom is said to be one of

the worst cases of police and prosecutorial misconduct in American history.

In the 11 years working with the wrongfully convicted I have felt that I could no longer be shocked

by a wrongful conviction. I was wrong! After reading the true story of Kerry's wrongful conviction I

was shocked and in disbelief by Kerry's wrongful conviction. This is the most horrific instance of any

wrongful conviction I have ever encountered. What the Smith County, Texas police and prosecutors

did to this man is beyond belief, and it still continues.

Kerry's story will show just how far police and prosecutors will go to frame an innocent man and

than over the years refuse against all evidence to admit they made a mistake.

If ever police and prosecutors should be punished for their actions the police and prosecutors in this

case should. After finishing this book I was ashamed that such a tragic injustice could happen in

I strongly suggest anyone having an interest in the wrongfully convicted or those working with the

wrongfully should order and read this book. You won't be disappointed but like me you may be

shocked and terribly angry for the injustice done to Kerry Max Cook.

Life in prison, began at 16 yrs of age for her..........

A compelling story of a child, only 16, facing life in prison, a must read.

"It’s a handwritten rundown, scribbled on a lined piece of notebook paper, of the dozens and dozens of people she had sexual relationships with during her troubled adolescence. In a detached, analytical tone, she proceeds to sort them by category: rapes (there were many), consensual encounters, those that occurred while she was high on drugs, those preceded or accompanied by beatings...." What kind of Christmases has Cyntoia had during her life??? We, as a society, must do better than this:"

Quote below is from the video..........

Published on Dec 23, 2012  Dr. Rima has been a Child, Adolescent and Adult Psychiatrist and physician for 42 years. In that time not only has she never written a prescription to medicate a patient using any pharmaceutical drug, she has treated many, many people like Adam Lanza.
In this video she talks about why school shootings and other massacres involve these dangerous psychiatric drugs and why this tragedy must stop. She includes a list of tools for treatment which make the use of these deadly drugs totally unnecessary.

If I opened the door to Paradise by Dr. Dan Edmunds

I read quite a no. of his postings and articles on his websites, this one really touched the depths of my soul.......Thank you Dr. Edmunds for sharing a part of your world for others.

If I Opened The Door To Paradise
Dr Dan Edmunds

If I opened the door to Paradise, would you choose to remain in Hell? If I gave you my heart, would you notice? Can you respond to that you never knew or had? Surrounded by the demons, yet truly alone. You recognize not your friends. Engulfed in delusions, seeking pleasure in that which but leads to more suffering. How I sought to change the wretched mind. A deafening silence, but then an echo, a constant echo. Are you too far away to hear it? Your hurt is now the hurt of others. You inflict your pain on many. Covered in stinking filfth, they say you are foul. Yet I saw what was within. I saw what was possible. You glorify the one who hurt you. You have indeed become him. A sick cycle. The wheel must be broken. Who are you? What do you see? A mirage. A false image, not you, but that which the demons say you must be to join their legion. You think they laugh and revel with you, they laugh at you, they scorn you. And now in the darkness, they flee, leaving you truly alone. If I open the door to Paradise to you now, will you choose to remain in Hell

Justice isn't served when offenders under 16 are treated as adults

Excerpt........please read full article, information and awareness of juvenile issues is so important to all, and our nation's children.

"Adult prosecution of juveniles under 18 – and particularly under 16 – distorts justice. It removes the flexibility and protections accorded by the juvenile court system in favor of something ostensibly tougher. But mostly it reflects a fear of “bad seed” juveniles who are beyond redemption and fit only for warehousing in adult prisons.
Many states lowered the age of transfer into the adult court system in the early 1990s amid an alarming rise in violent juvenile crime, much of it fueled by the arrival of crack cocaine in the nation’s cities............"

Juvenile Injustice

Excerpt.........please read this important article in full, so important to all of our nation's children.

"States must henceforth make “individualized sentencing decisions,” in Justice Elena Kagan’s words, rather than imposing mandatory life without parole. They must take into account a youth’s age, maturity, family circumstances and history, potential for rehabilitation and other factors. And states must engage in meaningful review of juveniles in prison so they have the opportunity to re-enter their communities if they are rehabilitated".

Juvenile justice reforms should incorporate science of adolescent development

Excerpt-please read and share full article, so important to our nation's children.

"Legal responses to juvenile offending should be grounded in scientific knowledge about adolescent development and tailored to an individual offender's needs and social environment, says a new report from the National Research Council. Accountability practices should not be carried over from criminal courts to juvenile courts; in particular, confinement should be used only in rare circumstances such as when a youth poses a high risk of harming others..........."

Learning From The Streets~Stay FREE of HIV & AIDS

Excerpt......Please read this great learning  article, A MUST READ......PLEASE SHARE WITH YOUR CHILDREN

"I now feel that the game, the streets, and my homeboys have robbed me of my life before I had the chance to live. Why? Because of the lack of educating me to the deadly risks that awaits to claim a new soul like mine through unprotected sex, but the fact still remains, I have been sentenced to death among the living by my own ignorance, my own lack of education, my own desires and my own freedom of choice to make life decisions. So don't be like me, stay HIV & AIDS free. Unprotected sex can make you another victim and ghost just like me."

Holistic reform takes root in Mississippi

Excerpt.......please read and share full article

"“The adult criminal court is no place to put children,” said Liz Ryan, the executive director of the Campaign for Youth Justice. “It doesn’t have the kind of accountability that the juvenile justice system has, it doesn’t have the kinds of services and treatment that are developmentally appropriate for children, [and] it places them at serious risk of harm in adult facilities and jails.”

Miranda Rights~Staying silent NOT enough/A MUST READ

Excerpt...please read full article....

Some kind of simple but unambiguous statement is the key, the Court said in Berghuis v. Thompkins. In other words. you can effectively give up your Miranda rights by simply failing to invoke them while the police continue to question you.
So, after an officer gives you a Miranda warning, it's best to make your desire to remain silent clear (and hopefully stop any police questioning) by saying something like "I wish to invoke my right to remain silent."
READ the supreme court's decision........
It is imperative/crucial for children and adults to be IN THE KNOW of the "miranda rights", one MUST TELL/say they "wish" to invoke their right to remain silent.
It is our duty as parents and advocates to help get people "educated" of their "rights"  Please share this info with those in your world.

Excerpt.......A must read article, of the pain and torture in prisons

"What I want to tell Acosta is that no part of my experience—not the uncertainty of when I would be free again, not the tortured screams of other prisoners—was worse than the four months I spent in solitary confinement. What would he say if I told him I needed human contact so badly that I woke every morning hoping to be interrogated? Would he believe that I once yearned to be sat down in a padded, soundproof room, blindfolded, and questioned, just so I could talk to somebody?.............."

People can change: Juveniles should not receive life sentences

(pic not of this article)

Excerpt.....PLEASE read full article, very interesting and informative

"Up until a few years ago, the fact that minors could receive life sentences did not concern me in the least. As the wife of a law enforcement officer, I had little mercy for offenders of any age, and the mantra “adult time for adult crime” was something my husband and I heartily endorsed.

Our bias against inmates ran deep, and we had no desire to extend any kind of friendship. But over the course of a few years, as this young man continued to write to us, it became evident that he was not at all like what we had imagined. The first indication of that came months after we began writing, when he refused our offer to give him a small amount of money to purchase art supplies............"
My personal thanks to the author for sharing this information. I agree children do change in their growing years, they DO "deserve a chance." Strongly urge our communities to get educated and involved in juvenile law "reform." We must help them to help themselves.

Kids behind bars in America/photos

About 70,000 kids sit behind bars in the U.S. at any given time, according to the Campaign for Youth Justice.

A coming together of "hearts"

So many shattered lives and broken hearts, suffering in silence, support needed but living lonely lives, not reaching out, for the world's pop. is so cold and cruel, how can one trust when betrayed so many times, faith is lost and trust is destroyed. IMO, communications is one contributing factor toward some therapy and healing on the soul. It IS most difficult to reach out and share our world, treading cautiously in finding that one true and honest person, which is so rare in today's world. We all have that need for love, compassion, kindness, we are always seeking to bring some peace and comfort in our lives. Paying it forward is always FREE, a little "time" is so simply to do ♥ ♥

'Juvenile In Justice': Richard Ross' Photographs Provide A Thoughtful Glimpse Into The Young World Behind Bars (PHOTOS)

Excerpt......please see full article to include photos, thanks to the author of this informative messages and photos.

"In Richard Ross' new book, "Juvenile In Justice" the veteran photographer documents imprisoned youth from more than 200 detention centers across the United States. Throughout almost 150 images, Ross takes his viewers into the isolated world of youth under lock and key. Whatever their crimes — and some are horrendous -- the series raises serious questions about the workings and purpose of the juvenile justice system. Are we really offering any chance of transforming these young people's lives? Ross offers a thought provoking entry into this dark world."
